Our Optometrists
Karen Hayward
Dr. Karen Hayward was born and raised in Port-au-Port, Newfoundland. She moved to Nova Scotia and completed her Bachelor of Science in 1998 at Saint Mary's University before continuing her studies at the University of Missouri St. Louis, where she earned her Doctor of Optometry in 2002. She also completed an Oral Therapeutics, Glaucoma and Advanced Diagnostic course from the Northeastern State University College of Optometry in 2014. Dr. Hayward practices at the FYidoctors - St. Albert Centre location, where she passionately works to provide excellent patient care and always ensures her patients and eye care needs are met above and beyond expectation. Dr. Hayward is currently serving on the Board of Directors for FYidoctors, and is past Chair of the FYidoctors Advisory Committee. She was also Chair of the Enhancing Life Foundation from 2014-2020 and thoroughly enjoyed her role in leading the charitable arm of FYidoctors. Dr. Hayward is now also serving as a council board member for the Alberta Association of Optometrists.
Raashi Surana
Dr. Surana was born in India and moved to Edmonton at a young age. After completing high school, she chose to complete her undergraduate studies from the University of Alberta and graduated with a Bachelor in Sciences. Dr. Surana was always interested in the field of Optometry from a young age. She studied at Inter American University of Puerto Rico and graduated from the IAUPR, School of Optometry. Dr. Surana is proud to be practicing Optometry with the entire team of FYidoctors Her top priority is providing quality patient care. She strongly believes in educating her patients in order to ensure that her patients have a thorough understanding of their ocular and overall health. Dr. Surana is excited to return to Edmonton area to her friends and family. In her spare time, she likes traveling, cheering on the Edmonton Oilers, as well as spending quality time with her friends and family.
Angeline Hong
Dr. Angeline Hong obtained her Science Physiology with Honours from the University of Western Ontario and then earned her Doctor of Optometry degree with Honours from the University of Waterloo. During Optometry school, Dr. Hong travelled to Haiti to provide eye care and glasses to the local community. She has also served as the mentorship director for the Association of Optometry Students, leading the OD mentorship program for students. D. Hong has a special interest and passion for dry eye disease, myopia control, and specialty contact lenses. She has completed externships in Ontario and Alberta, gaining extensive experience in advanced dry eye disease management, myopia control, pre and post-operative care for refractive surgeries, and management of other eye diseases, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. She also enjoys pediatric exams, contact lens fittings, and binocular vision assessments. When Dr. Hong is not in the clinic, you can find her participating in continuing education seminars, playing tennis, working out, going on hikes, or travelling.
Omar Ikram
Dr. Ikram graduated with distinction from Pacific University College of Optometry where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree. Dr. Ikram maintained his membership in the prestigious Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honours Society every year of his optometric education. Dr. Ikram also received the unique honor of being selected to attain specialized training with world-renowned experts in a clinical rotation on binocular vision complications. Through this unique experience, he gained expertise in the management of eye turns, lazy eyes, and vision therapy in both adult and pediatric populations. Dr. Ikram also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular pathology, and scleral lens fittings. Dr. Ikram believes in the importance of giving back to the community and volunteering his time to ensure that more people are provided with appropriate eye health screenings and medical interventions. A highlight of his career was travelling to Honduras with a team of optometrists to provide free eye care for low-income families. I am excited to be part of the St. Albert team. I strive to provide outstanding eye care to every patient I see, from infants to seniors. I strongly believe in the integration and symbiotic relationship between the eye and overall body health. The cutting-edge technologies and professional environment at St. Albert give me the ability to provide patients with the highest quality eye care.
Ashley Larsen
Dr. Ashley Larsen was raised in a small town in southern Alberta. After graduating high school as the valedictorian, she attended the University of Alberta for her undergraduate studies. Completing a Bachelor for Science was the first step in her road to Optometry. Next she studied at Pacific University where she not only completed her Doctorate in Optometry with distinction but was a member of the honour society Beta Sigma Kappa for all four years. Although school was always top priority, Dr. Larsen had no shortage of extracurricular activities. She was the entertainment chair for her class council, a member of many special interest clubs, including sports vision, pediatrics, and contact lenses. She has always had a passion for healthy living and ensures that she gets outdoor when every possible. Dr. Larsen is excited to be back in Alberta surrounded by her family and friends. She is now part of the FYidoctors team. During school she was trained to use the newest and most innovative technology out there and she ecstatic that found a company that supports and promotes advancements in eye care. Dr. Larsen is excited to be a part of the wonderful community of St. Albert, where she is sharing her enthusiasm for eye health and comfortable vision.
